3 Tips For Styling a Statement Piece of Home Décor

Investing in a statement piece of home décor — whether it’s a piece of art, some furniture, or a purely decorative feature — can do wonders for a space. But a particularly bold decorative piece can be difficult to style. So, here, Richard Eaton, Design Director at Poole Pottery shares his top tips for incorporating some statement home décor into your space to make it truly yours.

Let the statement piece inform your colour scheme

If you’ve picked out a statement piece in a bold colour, allow this to inform your colour scheme for a stylish but coordinated look. For example, if you’ve added an eye-catching piece of art to your space, pick out some of your favourite hues and then pepper them through your room. Soft furnishings like throws, scatter cushions, rugs, and curtains are ideal for this. Decorative details like vases, lampshades, and even coffee table books that are the same colour as your statement piece can really help to pull your room together.

Decorating the rest of your room in contrasting colours can be a smart move, too. For instance, you might have picked out an armchair in an eye-catching colour. You can use a colour wheel to see which kinds of hues will contrast with — but still complement — it. Particularly stylish combinations include olive green and burnt orange, as well as navy blue and mustard yellow. Again, you can use soft furnishings and smaller decorative details to inject your chosen colours into the space.

Keep the rest of your room simple

If you really want your statement piece to do all of the talking, keep the rest of your room as simple as possible. Sticking to a small palette of two or three neutral colours will give you a great blank canvas that you can then bring to life with a stand-out piece of art, decoration, or furniture.

This doesn’t mean you have to let the rest of your room blend into one — you can still use different hues to add dimension to your space. Painting your walls white, then adding light wooden furniture, and minimalist soft furnishings will create the perfect backdrop for a showstopping statement piece.

Don’t be afraid to rearrange the room until you’re happy

Finally, don’t be afraid to try out a few options when you’re trying to work out how best to style your statement decorative piece. It’s so easy to hang a piece of art, place some furniture, or position a decorative detail in a particular place and then just leave it, even if it isn’t quite giving you the effect you’re looking for. Getting a room right can be a longer process that involves a few rearrangements, so don’t be afraid to switch it up until you’re completely happy.

Your home should feel like it reflects your needs and style completely. It’s well worth putting a bit of extra time and effort in to get it right.

If you’re thinking about buying a statement piece of home décor, or you already have and aren’t quite sure what to do with it, these tips should help. Take them on board and you’ll find it much easier to create a stylish space you love spending time in.
