The Redesdale – A New Cotswolds Stay to Add to Your Weekend Wishlist
If you’re looking for a quintessential Cotswolds escape, The Redesdale could be just the place. Set in the heart of Moreton-in-Marsh, Gloucestershire, this charming 17th-century pub has recently reopened following a sensitive refurbishment by Oxfordshire-based Brakspear, bringing a fresh feel to one of the area’s historic landmarks.
Formerly known as The Redesdale Arms Hotel, the Grade II listed property has been renamed simply The Redesdale and now forms part of Brakspear’s Honeycomb Houses collection – a group of 12 historic pubs with restaurants and rooms, each with its own individual character.
A classic Cotswolds pub, given a fresh feel
The refurbishment has been carefully considered, retaining many of the building’s original architectural features while giving the interiors a more polished country pub feel. Think cosy corners, inviting dining spaces, antique and vintage finds mixed with contemporary touches, and log fires ready to take centre stage come winter. There’s also a sunny garden terrace and private dining space, with the restaurant accommodating up to 92 guests.
At the heart of the pub is the main bar, where you can settle in with a pint of traditional Brakspear ale, including Oxford Gold and Brakspear Gravity, alongside locally brewed Cotswolds Best and a changing selection of guest ales. There’s also a well-curated wine list and a menu of seasonal and classic cocktails.
Elevated pub classics
Food is very much part of the experience. Head Chef Vlasta Bilobrk and Honeycomb Houses’ Head of Food, Ken Umasanthiram, have created an all-day menu centred around elevated pub favourites, from steaks and classic pies to stone-baked pizzas, alongside more contemporary dishes.
Seasonal, locally sourced produce features throughout, with breakfast, lunch, afternoon tea and dinner all available. There are vegetarian and vegan choices, a dedicated children’s menu and daily specials, making it just as suited to a relaxed family lunch as it is to a leisurely evening meal.
For those staying overnight, breakfast is included when booking directly, with the morning menu covering everything from a classic English breakfast and Eggs Benedict to Royale and Florentine, smashed avocado and shakshuka.
Country-style rooms
For those wanting to make a weekend of it, The Redesdale has 33 rooms spread throughout the property. Seven sit above the pub, three overlook the garden terrace, 12 are housed within a dedicated accommodation block and a further 11 can be found in the converted Mews building at the rear, with some offering their own private courtyards.
The rooms have a contemporary country-boutique feel, with soft throws, luxury linens and plenty of thoughtful touches. Guests can expect Rave coffee pods from the Cotswolds-based roaster, homemade cookies, complimentary Wi-Fi and smart TVs, while bathrooms feature walk-in showers, Bramley toiletries and, in some rooms, freestanding baths.
Rooms start from £140 per night on a B&B basis, with breakfast included when booking directly.
A dog-friendly Cotswolds escape
And if you’re bringing the dog along, you’ll be in good company. Fifteen of the rooms are dog-friendly, while useful facilities include a dedicated dog-washing station, boot-cleaning station, cycle racks and external storage. It’s a particularly appealing option for those looking to explore the Cotswolds on foot or two wheels.
Exploring Moreton-in-Marsh
Location is another reason to consider a stay. Moreton-in-Marsh is a lively Cotswold market town, with its attractive high street lined with independent shops and cafés, as well as a weekly Tuesday market. The town also has direct GWR services to London Paddington, with Moreton-in-Marsh station just a flat third-of-a-mile walk from The Redesdale.
Beyond the town itself, there’s plenty to explore. Batsford Arboretum, Sezincote House and Garden, Hidcote Gardens and Chastleton House are all within easy reach, while some of the Cotswolds’ most recognisable villages and towns including Bourton-on-the-Water, Blockley, the Slaughters, Stow-on-the-Wold and Chipping Campden are close by.
For those wanting to venture further, Cheltenham, Cirencester and Oxford are all around a 40-minute drive away.
