Managing Stress During Legal Family Matters

Family legal matters like divorce are complex and emotionally charged processes that can be incredibly stressful for all those involved. Over 80,000 divorces were granted in England and Wales in 2022 alone so it’s clear that many families are navigating difficult terrain every year.

The legal, financial and emotional challenges associated with family breakdown can have a profound impact on mental and physical wellbeing. While there is little you can do to move legal procedures on faster, you can lessen the burden on you and your family with the right emotional strategies.

Identifying stressors

The first step to managing stress is understanding its source so learning to identify stressors is key to making it through proceedings calmly. Common stressors in legal family matters include uncertainty about the legal process, financial concerns, time pressures and disagreements with the other party.

Early signs of stress can manifest physically, emotionally and behaviourally so teach yourself to recognise them in your family members. This allows you to take proactive steps to manage stress before it gets overwhelming.

Some good coping methods include listening to your body, observing the behaviours of those around you and keeping a journal to track symptoms.

Seeking support from loved ones

You don’t have to go through legal matters on your own. Leaning on a strong support network is invaluable during challenging times so seek out your friends and family for support. They can provide you with emotional support, practical assistance and a listening ear.

Communicate your needs clearly with supportive individuals who can offer empathy and understanding without judgement. This will alleviate stress, prevent feelings of isolation and help you to feel heard.

Practicing self-care

Self-care involves taking time to care for your physical, emotional and mental wellbeing and it does wonders for sustainably managing stress. Engaging in regular exercise, maintaining a balanced diet and ensuring sufficient sleep are fundamental to building resilience.

It’s equally important to make time for enjoyable activities and hobbies as they can serve as a much-needed escape from the pressures of the legal process.

Consulting mental health professionals

When your stress reaches overwhelming levels, don’t hesitate to seek professional help. Therapists and counsellors are trained to provide coping strategies, emotional support and guidance through the challenges of family breakdown. They can also help individuals develop healthy ways to manage their emotions.

Communicating with legal representatives

Open and effective communication with your legal representatives is vital. Your family solicitor will be able to provide guidance and support throughout the process. Don’t hesitate to express your concerns and ask questions.

Build a trusting relationship with your lawyer by asking as many questions as you need and being clear about your concerns.
