How to Become a Landscape Gardener

Anyone with a passion for gardening and nature may want to consider a career as a landscape gardener. This allows you to make a living from creating beautiful outdoor spaces, and this can be highly rewarding. So, what do you need to do to become a landscape gardener? Keep reading to find out.

What does a landscaper do?

A landscape gardener will improve existing gardens by using their expertise to create attractive and functional spaces for clients. There are also areas of landscaping that you can specialise in, such as water gardens and fountains (known as aquascapes), irrigation systems or improving the design of farms or other commercial outdoor spaces.

How to become a landscaper

There are a number of ways that you can become a landscaper, and there are no set requirements for the role. You can take a college course, complete an apprenticeship or start as an assistant landscaper and work your way up. You could also complete a specialist training course that would allow you to learn everything that you need to know. The key to success is being able to demonstrate that you have the skills and knowledge to succeed, which include:

What tasks does a landscaper do day-to-day?

One of the great aspects of this job is that the day-to-day can vary greatly, and you will be spending a lot of time outdoors. Some of the main tasks that you will be completing include talking to clients about their needs and keeping them updated on projects, planting shrubs and trees, putting up garden fence panels, networking with suppliers and educating clients on how to look after their space. There are also many different environments where you could be working, such as a client’s garden, a client’s place of work or at a garden centre. The variety that this job brings is one of the major perks, as it means that no two days are ever quite the same.
