A Fresh New Chapter for Roots + Seeds: Sustainable Dining Arrives at Gloucester Food Dock
Following the resounding success of its flagship venue in Cirencester, the acclaimed Roots + Seeds Kitchen Garden has opened the doors to a brand-new sister eatery — Roots + Seeds Café & Kitchen — now delighting guests at Gloucester Food Dock. Nestled on the edge of the historic Victoria Basin and set within a beautifully restored Victorian warehouse, this latest addition offers an irresistible blend of sustainable dining, community spirit, and local flavour.
With a spacious terrace that opens onto the harbourside, it’s the perfect spot for long, sun-drenched lunches or early evening drinks with friends — dogs very much welcome.
Where sustainability meets modern British brasserie
The menu is a love letter to Gloucestershire’s fields, farms, and artisan producers. Guests can expect a seasonal, ever-changing selection of modern British dishes served with brasserie flair — think hearty breakfasts, vibrant brunches, fresh salads, artisan sandwiches, hand-rolled pasta, and stacked burgers made with care and conscience. A daily ‘Specials Board’ highlights the very best of what’s fresh and available that day, always led by the seasons.
Everything is made fresh to order and available to enjoy in the relaxed café setting or on-the-go. Vegetarian, vegan, and dietary-friendly dishes are thoughtfully included on every menu, while a dedicated children’s selection balances wholesome choices with familiar favourites.
As always, sustainability is central to the Roots + Seeds ethos. Many of the ingredients are harvested daily from the team’s own quarter-acre kitchen garden in Cirencester or sourced from a trusted network of local growers and producers.

Sip local: From signature gin to award-winning wines
No visit is complete without a sip of something special. The café’s well-stocked bar serves up craft beers from Gloucester Brewery and Cotswold Lakes Brew Co., alongside a carefully curated wine list created in partnership with Cirencester’s Talking Wines. Expect standout English wines from nearby Woodchester Valley Vineyard and other hand-picked favourites.
Gin lovers should make a beeline for the award-winning Roots + Seeds London Dry Gin, distilled by co-founder Sam Lawson-King, and the star of their beautifully balanced cocktails.
A home at Gloucester Food Dock
Gloucester Food Dock has fast become a go-to destination for food lovers — a buzzing waterfront community of exciting independents bringing fresh energy to the historic harbourside. Roots + Seeds Café & Kitchen fits right in, offering a relaxed, family-friendly environment where community and sustainability are always on the menu.
This new venue marks the third collaboration from long-time friends and business partners Sam Lawson-King and Toby Baggott, whose hospitality journey began with the wildly successful Scenic Supper — a socially-distanced fine dining experience launched post-lockdown in 2020, set in vintage glasshouses on a Cotswold hilltop. From there, the duo opened Roots + Seeds Kitchen Garden in Cirencester in 2023, followed by Cattivo Pizza in 2024 — both at the Old Kennels site.
Accolades and recognition
Their innovative approach hasn’t gone unnoticed. In 2024 alone, Roots + Seeds Kitchen Garden racked up a string of prestigious accolades, including:
- Start-Up of the Year, Gloucestershire Foodie Awards
- Best Restaurant in the Cotswolds, Slow Cotswolds Awards (by Bradt Travel Guides)
- Highly Commended Chef of the Year, So Glos Lifestyle Awards
