What To Think About Before Renovating Your Kitchen

Kitchen renovations are exciting, of course, but the reality is that they can also end up feeling quite overwhelming once everything actually starts happening. At first it’s usually just a case of thinking it might be nice to update a few things, and then you’ll be looking at layouts, storage, flooring, lighting, worktops, colours, appliances, and about a thousand decisions you didn’t even realise you’d need to make in the first place – that’s a lot to deal with.

The good news is that planning things properly before you even think about getting started usually makes the whole process much easier and helps avoid expensive mistakes later on, so with that in mind, keep reading to find out more.

Think about how you’ll actually use the space

One thing people sometimes tend to forget is that kitchens need to work for real life and not just look nice in photographs (and it’s easy to get carried away with looks, so it’s worth stopping to think about).

In other words, a kitchen that looks amazing but doesn’t actually work all that well or even suit the people using it every day is probably going to become frustrating pretty quickly, and that’s why it’s worth properly thinking about how the space gets used now and what’s currently annoying about it.

Maybe there’s never enough storage, perhaps the layout feels cramped when more than one person’s cooking, or maybe there’s not enough worktop space and everything constantly feels cluttered, and it’s those kinds of practical things that are just as important as anything else.

Storage makes all the difference

Something that tends to happen when it comes to kitchens is just how much people underestimate how important storage is, but the fact is that it can essentially make or break how much you enjoy the kitchen and even want to use it.

Basically, if there’s nowhere sensible to put things, the kitchen can just end up feeling messy almost all the time, no matter how much you clean and tidy. That’s why you’ll want to make sure your new kitchen has plenty of deep drawers, pull-out cupboards, corner storage, and so on, because that’s going to make life so much easier.

Think carefully about the layout

The layout of your new kitchen totally affects how comfortable it feels to use, and since you’ll be using the space every day in at least some way (even if you don’t cook a full dinner, for example, you’ll probably still make coffee in there), it makes sense getting that part completely right.

You’ll need to think about where the appliances are going to go, how much room there is to move around, whether the cupboard doors can open all the way, and so on – there’s a lot to consider when you get down to it. That’s why it’s a good idea to work with experts like Parker Kitchens who understand exactly how to design a kitchen that works.

Don’t just follow trends

It’s very easy to get influenced by trends online, especially when there are constantly new kitchen styles appearing everywhere, and of course, the more you start looking, the more are going to pop up thanks to how the algorithm works.

But the problem is that trends change quickly, and something that looks amazing on social media now might not feel quite as appealing after a few years, so it’s not the best route to take. Of course, we’re not saying you shouldn’t choose modern styles obviously, but it’s usually better to focus on things you really like rather than what feels fashionable because it’s not going to last, and you’ll have to start all over again.
