The Castle Returns: A Country Favourite, Beautifully Refreshed
Set within the postcard-perfect village of Castleton, deep in the rolling landscape of the Peak District, The Castle occupies a setting that feels both restorative and quietly impressive. Surrounded by sweeping hills, heritage trails and some of Derbyshire’s most dramatic scenery, a visit here begins long before you step through the door.
This much-loved country pub has reopened its doors with a fresh sense of style, blending its longstanding heritage with a warm, rustic elegance that feels both familiar and elevated.
Inside, the atmosphere is immediate and inviting. Fires glow, textures are richer, and cosy corners feel more considered than ever. It’s a space designed for lingering – whether over a relaxed Sunday lunch, an unhurried evening meal, or a special family gathering. The transformation enhances what regulars have always appreciated: comfort, character and genuine hospitality.

Spaces to gather
The refurbishment extends throughout the pub. A newly refreshed beer garden offers an inviting countryside setting for alfresco drinks and dining, while the updated interiors bring a softer, more contemporary finish to the dining spaces. The stylish main dining room easily accommodates both intimate suppers and larger celebrations, complemented by three semi-private rooms that provide the perfect backdrop for birthdays, anniversaries and family occasions.
At its core, The Castle remains true to the essence of a great country pub – hearty food, quality ingredients and a welcoming atmosphere that encourages guests to settle in and relax.
A menu rooted in comfort
The revamped menu reflects that balance of comfort and refinement. Indulgent Beef and Red Wine Lasagne sits alongside slow-cooked Lamb Shank and delicately seared fillet of Sea Bass. Classic favourites continue to hold pride of place, from perfectly cooked steaks and traditional Fish & Chips to the pub’s much-loved Home-Baked Pie of the Day.

A pub with a story
Steeped in history, The Castle has long been part of local lore. In the 1800s, it served as a stop on the Wellington Express coach route between Manchester and Sheffield. Stories of four resident spirits, including the tale of a jilted bride still add a touch of intrigue to its characterful walls.
Part of the Vintage Inns Collection
The Castle is proud to belong to the Vintage Inns collection – 180 characterful pubs across the UK, each set within picturesque countryside locations and united by a commitment to quality, heritage and atmosphere.

A warm welcome – For all
Hospitality here extends to every guest, including four-legged companions. Dogs are warmly welcomed, with water and treats available to ensure they are as comfortable as their owners. Whether stopping in before, during or after a countryside walk, The Castle remains a place to rest, refuel and enjoy the enduring appeal of the classic country pub.
“We’re excited to reopen our doors to the local community and welcome guests both new and old to see the brand-new look Castle, says General Manager Richard Deeming.
It’s still the same warm, friendly, Derbyshire pub you know and love, but now with a fresh feel for 2026. So, whether you’re after a cosy corner to unwind with a warming tipple or two or a lovely spot to enjoy a hearty meal this winter, we can’t wait to share it with you. We pride ourselves on being a fantastic local pub where you can relax with a pint in hand or enjoy delicious meals in a friendly, welcoming atmosphere”.
