Would You Consider Renting Your Clothing? Check Out These Top Sustainable Fashion Options

How many dresses do you have hanging in your wardrobe that you just never find the time to wear? Let’s face it, it’s a very common issue, which is exacerbated by the universal truth that, no matter how on-point your wardrobe is when you open it up before a night out, you always find yourself with nothing to wear. Here’s something for you to chew on, though: an estimated £140 million worth of clothes goes into UK landfills each year. That’s 350,000 tonnes of clothing waste. How many of these do you imagine are discarded, unwanted night-out clothes bought on impulse but eventually shoved to the back of the wardrobe?

In light of this, it’s perhaps time to reconsider your habits if you’re a compulsive ‘throwaway fashion’ buyer. Sure, there are reasons for constantly shopping for high street staples – mainly that they have a tendency to fall apart much more easily than their more expensive counterparts. But designer clothes are pricey, and buying a designer evening dress (which you’ll probably only need to wear a few times a year) is very different to buying a luxury cashmere sweater that’ll see you through many winters, or a designer bag that you’ll carry every day for years.

There is a solution, however, waiting online: fashion rental sites, which allow you to hire eveningwear from quality brands at a similar price to the average Topshop dress. Fashion rental is on the rise – the CEO of US rental site Rent the Runway has claimed the fashion industry is outdated; we don’t need to hold on to our clothes forever.

So why not rent them?

Listed below are some of the best sites to rent clothes from, but watch this space – as consumers become increasingly savvy shoppers and more environmentally conscious, we predict a surge in popularity of fashion rentals in the near future.

Girl Meets Dress

There’s a wide variety of brands on offer at Girl Meets Dress, which has long been lauded by the fashion press as one of the best online fashion rental services. Christopher Kane, Stella McCartney, Victoria Beckham, Jacquemus, Dolce & Gabbana, Marc by Marc Jacobs, Carven and Acne Studios are just a few of the best names available on the site.

Chic By Choice

Chic By Choice is worth a look if you’re into party dresses with on-trend, quirky styling twists. The focus here is on younger, cooler brands like Self Portrait, Alexis, Monique Lhullier and Badgley Mischka.

My Celebrity Dress

My Celebrity Dress is, as you probably guessed, dedicated to renting out the same dresses (not the exact same, obviously) that celebrities have worn on the catwalk. Expect everything from Herve Leger and Three Floor to See by Chloe and Matthew Williamson – there’s something for every taste and occasion.

Dream Wardrobe

Dream Wardrobe has been name-dropped several times by The Telegraph’s fashion department, and for good reason, as the company offers glamorous designs from the likes of Badgley Mischka, Alice + Olivia and DVF, so it’s perfect for prom dresses. You can also get £10 off your first order, and bag yourself a free dress hire once you’ve successfully referred two friends to the service. Sharing is caring!

Would you rent your clothing? We’d love to know your thoughts!
