I’m An Interiors Expert – Here Are The 5 Biggest Trends I Predict For 2025
From clashing colours to clever storage solutions for kids, these are the must-have interior trends for the upcoming year, according to an expert.
For those looking for inspiration on what is ‘in’ and what is ‘out’ this coming year Charlie Snape, Interior Design Specialist from Hammonds Furniture has given his top five recommendations for interior design décor and styles that will not only look great, but withstand the test of the trends.
Charlie says… “For some, the word ‘trend’ can have negative connotations – a fleeting style that you’ll grow to dislike in a matter of time. However, that is far from the truth. If you pick a trend suitable for your lifestyle and to your own taste, it will not only benefit your day-to-day but is a great way of making your home feel yours.”
Unique ceilings
Unexpected ceilings are a subtle yet powerful way to transform the overlooked upper space into a focal point. By drawing the eye upward, you can add a unique feature to your room that many others don’t have. There are different ways you can do this.
- Murals
Murals on ceilings are a great example of an unexpected ceiling. By transforming the space from a simple, plain surface into a canvas for art and expression. Typically hand-painted, the mural could be anything from a landscape, a delicate pattern, or a bold, contemporary design.
If a painted mural seems too time-consuming for you, wallpapers offer a huge variety of design to replicate murals in the same way hand painted ones would.
- Colour Drenching
The colour drenching technique is where a single colour is applied to multiple surfaces in a room. This is typically done on the walls, ceiling, and sometimes even the skirting boards. The idea is to envelop the entire space in one cohesive colour, which gives the room a harmonious look.
Breaking away from the traditional approach of keeping the ceiling white or neutral, this technique works really well with bold or saturated colours such as deep blues, warm terracotta or earthy browns and greens.
Colour maximalism
This coming year we’re going to see more unique colour choices in many homes. This represents a shift away from the neutral-heavy trends that dominated the previous decade. As many are eager to steer away from the ‘perfectly polished’ look, the use of colour will be integral to creating a maximalist vibe. The following are my recommendations of how colour maximalism can be done.
- Unexpected orange
Last year was all about red. This year, unexpected pops of vibrant orange will be a popular way to bring unique colour into the home. The colour orange is great at balancing vividness yet warmth, making it incredibly versatile. Mix and match different tones such as sunset orange, coral, or tangerine. This combined with soft neutrals creates a balanced, layered look.
Consider painting an orange feature wall or investing in an orange piece of statement furniture, such as a sofa.
However, if you’re hesitant to go all-in on orange, start with accent soft furnishings. Throw pillows, blankets, and rugs in various shades of orange can bring the same playfulness to a room without having to splash out on new big-ticket items.
- Clashing colours
Instead of sticking to a strict colour scheme of 1-3 complimenting colours, consider clashing colours. Clashing colours can work great for a maximalist environment when you find the right balance. Mix bold hues with intention, then use neutrals to anchor them, and let each colour have its moment to shine.
To make clashing colours feel cohesive, pair them with a common element like texture or pattern. A good example of contrasting colours are electric blue and bright red, or pastel yellow and deep purple, but balance them with soft textures like warm wood, glass or neutral marble.
Functional spaces
People are increasingly seeking comfort and convenience in their homes. Functional spaces allow for customised, adaptable environments where homeowners can easily access everything they need, whilst still loving the look of their home. A few great examples of this are.
- Boot rooms
Once seen as a practical luxury for rural estates or countryside homes, boot rooms are becoming increasingly popular in modern interior design, and something I believe we’re going to see a lot more of in 2025.
In a bid to create more organised, clutter-free spaces, boot rooms are a great solution. These spaces provide a dedicated area for shoes, coats, bags, and other outdoor gear, helping to keep mud, dirt, and clutter out of main living areas.
- Clever storage solutions for kids
Children’s rooms tend to collect toys, books, and other items quickly, creating a lot of visual clutter. Subtle storage solutions like built-in shelves, hidden drawers, or over-bed storage can help keep toys and belongings organised, maintaining a tidy room. When storage is integrated into the design of the room in a seamless way, it encourages children to put things away, helping them develop good habits early on.
By investing in smart yet timeless storage for children, you can avoid having to change it as the child grows. Aim to pick storage that blends with the room’s design whilst also accommodating different items as your child’s interests and hobbies change over time.
- Understairs storage
Understairs spaces are no longer just about storing unloved items, they’re becoming integral parts of the home’s overall design.
Whether it’s a hidden pantry just off the kitchen, a storage nook for toys and sports equipment, or a tucked-away place for coats and shoes, clever understairs storage will allow for a tidier home.
Dark luxury
This won’t be new to 2025 in fact, the ‘dark luxury’ look has been making a resurgence in the past couple of years as we shift toward using richer colour palettes and sophisticated materials to create spaces that feel luxurious. Here are a few ways you can incorporate dark luxury into your home.
- Timeless colours
Using dark shades like charcoal grey, matte black, deep blues as well as jewel tones like ruby red and emerald, green. This trend moves away from the light, airy, and minimalist styles that have previously been popular, embracing a moodier, more luxurious atmosphere.
- Strong craftsmanship
The luxury aspect of this trend aligns with strong craftsmanship. Dark luxury interiors often incorporate high-quality pieces such as handwoven textiles, custom-made furniture, or one-of-a-kind statement items. The focus is on timeless luxury rather than fast trends, and pieces that will stand the test of time, both in terms of design and durability.
Materials like natural stone, dark wood, and marble are great options not only for their timeless appearance but also for their longevity and sustainability.
Bold hardware choices
The contrasting hardware interior design trend is all about mixing different finishes and styles of hardware – such as handles, knobs, faucets and light fixtures. These can be small upgrades that totally change the look of a room.
- Black handles on light cabinetry
Combining black hardware on light cabinetry creates maximum visual impact and a contemporary feel all at the same time. The contrast of matte black handles on light wood or neutral high gloss cabinetry is an example of this.
- Classic colours in contemporary shapes
Gold, brass or silver handles are here to stay however, not every kitchen will suit traditional or rustic styles. By picking timeless gold, brass or silver handles but in a contemporary shape, such as circular or octagonal, offers a twist on the classic and something I expect we’ll see a lot more of.
