How to Create the Perfect Silhouette

The perfect silhouette can make a world of difference when it comes to building an outfit that you’re comfortable and confident in. Essentially, a silhouette describes the shape of a person. If you cut out all of the details, what would be left?

Ideally, you want a silhouette that makes you feel comfortable and that in turn, draws the eye. No matter your body shape, the way you dress and present yourself can result in a stunning silhouette.

Enhancing your waist

As a general rule, a feminine silhouette accentuates the waist. Not everyone has a naturally defined or obvious waist. You might have more of an athletic build rather than an hourglass figure, or you might be apple-shaped, where you have less of a waist.

But there are a few ways to create shape in this area. One method is to think about your foundation. A waist trainer, or corset, is designed to emphasise the waist and hug your figure in the right places, providing support and smoothing. Whether you’ve recently had surgery or not, a waist trainer is comfortable, while still cinching your waist and helping you maintain your figure.

You can also enhance your waist by thinking about the clothes you wear and matching them to your body type. If you’re pear-shaped or top-heavy, you can create more of an hourglass figure by adding more volume to the top or bottom half of your body, respectively.

Colour theory and clothing

It’s no secret that the colours you wear matter. Ideally, you should know what colours suit your complexion so that you can wear ones that work for you. The key to looking good isn’t necessarily to chase trends and do what everyone else is doing, but to dress for your appearance.

As well as choosing colours that compliment your colouring, you should also think about how they complement each other. Some colour combinations can be incredibly flattering and can even have a slimming effect

We all know that black is slimming, but it’s not the only option and, if black can wash out your colouring, it might not be the best option. Other neutral colours work as well, and don’t be afraid of bright colours either.

Wear clothes that fit

Okay, this sounds like an obvious thing to do, but it’s surprisingly common for people, especially women, to wear ill-fitting clothes. This comes down to the sizing of your clothes, but also whether they’re actually fitted to your body.

When buying clothes off the rack, make sure to pick the size that suits you most. Don’t look at the numbers, just try the clothes on. Sizes aren’t consistent anyway, and what actually matters is how it fits.

This can often get you a close fit, but if you really want your clothes to look amazing on you, get them fitted to your body. We’re all different shapes and sizes, and while you can’t change your body type, you can make sure your clothes suit you, rather than trying to do things the other way around.
